Who covers you against your insurers?

In the light of another major UK insurer being fined for ‘mis-selling’, partner Marcus Weatherby underlines the importance of having access to truly independent legal advice

marcus_weatherbySwinton Insurance , one of the country’s largest insurers, has been found by the Financial Conduct Authority to have ‘prioritised profit’ at the expense of its customers.

It has been fined £7.38 million for mis-selling add ons such as personal accident, home emergency and motor breakdown policies.

I assume that they will declare if this affects the cost of premiums to the consumer in the future – usually we hear only of the shadowy hand of ‘undetected insurance fraud’ causing such increases.

Can we  trust insurers to always put the customer before profit? Doubt on this issue must surely underline the importance of truly independent legal advice.
